Helping Children Cope

We can all sometimes feel helpless when we experience or even just hear about catastrophes and tragedies. Earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, kidnappings, school shootings -- all these events can affect us profoundly. However, children can be even more profoundly affected because they look to adults to keep the world safe, and when things happen that even adults have no control over, they can lose their sense of security.

Read the following article from About.com:

Helping Your Gifted Child Cope with Tragic Events

This deals with helping ALL children, not just those who are gifted.

Psychology

The Virtual Learning Academy has a new course available for students. It's Psychology and is a well-rounded course that gives a thorough background of Psychology in addition to many topics teens and young adults deal with on a daily basis. If this is a course your child is interested in taking, notify your home school to see if it's an option.

End of School Year

Parents,
It's getting close to the end of another school year! Your child may have to complete his/her VLA coursework by the end of the school year. If you are unsure of the deadline, please call your school and speak to the person who signed your child up for VLA. Encourage your child to work on a daily basis in order to finish in a timely manner. Perhaps provide some incentive of a reward if finished on time. For instance, offer to take them to a movie, buy them a video game, take them to the library to pick out a book they've been wanting to read, etc.

We hope VLA has been and will continue to be a positive experience for your child. If we can answer any questions for you, please don't hesitate to call.

Watch for New Method of Grading English Work on VLA - Coming This Fall!

We are currently in the process of changing the procedure that your child will work on English units where a paper is asked to be typed. The picture above will be present in the comment section which indicates for your child to stop and submit their work before moving on to next step. This holds true for each part of the writing process. This will enable the teacher to have a chance to look over their work before they proceed with their final draft. This will hold true for the topic and the topic sentence as well as the following:

Rough Draft: Type your rough draft in a word document, and attach the document to the answer box. When you have finished this part of the assignment, save your work and submit your answers to your teacher before moving on. If you have any questions, be sure to email your teacher for help.

Self-Evaluate: You should submit the same word document you prepared for your rough draft with all of the revisions in place. If you have any questions, be sure to email your teacher for help.

Final Draft:  Make your final corrections and revisions. Be sure to email your teacher if you have any questions. Submit your final draft in the box below. You should submit the same word document you’ve been working on and revising.

Make sure you communicate with your child and their teacher so everything runs smooth.

March Reminder

Parents,
Please remind your child of any deadlines given by their school district for when the school wants VLA courses to be complete. If you are in doubt of any deadlines, please contact your school. If, by chance, your child's deadline is the end of the school year, you need to have your child work at a pace that this can be accomplished.

Attention:

Attention: The VLA system will be down on Monday January 16 from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM (EST) due to a server upgrade.
